Haider is a 2014 Hindi-language movie directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, who also co-produced it with Siddharth Roy Kapur and co-wrote it with Basharat Peer. It is based on William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet and also draws inspiration from Basharat Peer's memoir Curfewed Night. The movie stars Shahid Kapoor as Haider, a young man who returns to Kashmir after his father's disappearance to confront his uncle Khurram (Kay Kay Menon), whom he suspects of being involved in his father's fate. The movie also features Tabu as Haider's mother Ghazala, Shraddha Kapoor as his love interest Arshia, Irrfan Khan as Roohdaar, a mysterious figure who reveals the truth about Haider's father, and Narendra Jha as Dr. Hilal Meer, Haider's father and a doctor who is accused of harboring terrorists.
Haider is the third installment of Bhardwaj's Shakespearean trilogy after Maqbool (2003) and Omkara (2006). The movie is set in the backdrop of the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995 and explores the themes of revenge, loyalty, betrayal, madness, and identity. The movie also incorporates elements of Kashmiri culture, politics, and history, such as the use of folk songs, poetry, costumes, and references to historical events and figures. The movie was praised for its cinematography, music, direction, screenplay, and performances of the ensemble cast. It was also controversial for its depiction of the Kashmir issue and received criticism from some groups for being anti-national or anti-army.
Haider was released worldwide on 2 October 2014 and received critical acclaim and commercial success. It was also screened at various international film festivals and won several awards and nominations. Haider was the first Indian movie to win the People's Choice Award at the Rome Film Festival. It also won five National Film Awards and five Filmfare Awards among others. Haider is widely regarded as one of the best movies of 2014 and one of the best adaptations of Hamlet.

The Making of Haider
Bhardwaj had wanted to make a movie based on Hamlet for a long time, but he was not sure about the setting and the context. He was inspired by Basharat Peer's memoir Curfewed Night, which narrated his experiences of growing up in Kashmir during the 1990s. Bhardwaj met Peer and asked him to collaborate on the screenplay. Peer agreed and they spent several months researching and writing the script. They also visited Kashmir and interviewed various people, including former militants, journalists, lawyers, and civilians.
Bhardwaj faced many difficulties in finding a suitable actor to play the role of Haider. He initially approached Shah Rukh Khan, who had worked with him in Om Shanti Om (2007), but Khan declined due to his busy schedule. Bhardwaj then approached Hrithik Roshan, who also turned down the offer. Bhardwaj finally cast Shahid Kapoor, who had previously worked with him in Kaminey (2009). Kapoor agreed to do the role without reading the script and underwent a physical and mental transformation for the character. He shaved his head, lost weight, learned Kashmiri accent and poetry, and isolated himself from his family and friends.
Tabu was Bhardwaj's first choice for the role of Ghazala, Haider's mother. Tabu had also worked with Bhardwaj in Maqbool (2003), where she played the role of Lady Macbeth. Tabu accepted the role without hesitation and said that she was fascinated by the complexity and depth of Ghazala's character. She also said that she shared a great rapport with Bhardwaj and Kapoor and enjoyed working with them.
Kay Kay Menon was cast as Khurram, Haider's uncle and Ghazala's second husband. Menon had also worked with Bhardwaj in Maqbool (2003) and Dus Kahaniyaan (2007). Menon said that he was impressed by Bhardwaj's vision and interpretation of Hamlet and that he found Khurram to be a very interesting and challenging character to play.
Shraddha Kapoor was cast as Arshia, Haider's love interest and a journalist. Shraddha Kapoor said that she was honored to be a part of Bhardwaj's movie and that she learned a lot from him and her co-stars. She also said that she loved playing Arshia, who was a strong and independent woman.
Irrfan Khan was cast as Roohdaar, a mysterious figure who reveals the truth about Haider's father to him. Irrfan Khan had also worked with Bhardwaj in Maqbool (2003) and 7 Khoon Maaf (2011). Irrfan Khan said that he agreed to do the role because he trusted Bhardwaj's vision and that he found Roohdaar to be a very intriguing and mysterious character.
Narendra Jha was cast as Dr. Hilal Meer, Haider's father and a doctor who is accused of harboring terrorists. Jha said that he was grateful to Bhardwaj for giving him such an important role and that he felt privileged to work with such talented actors.
